Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: Eight Days of Police Custody
We’ve got breaking updates from Meghalaya. A supposed honeymoon has turned into one of the most chilling local news stories this year.
A Shillong court on Wednesday ordered that 24-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi and her four alleged accomplices be held in police custody for eight days. This hearing follows charges that Sonam murdered her husband during their trip.
Sonam was brought in late Tuesday from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Her four co-accused arrived the next morning on transit remand from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Police had asked for ten days but agreed to eight so the Special Investigation Team (SIT) can reconstruct the scene in Sohra (Cherrapunji).
Here’s what we know about the case. Raja Raghuvanshi, a 29-year-old businessman from Indore, and Sonam disappeared on May 23 while honeymooning in East Khasi Hills. His decomposed body turned up on June 2 in a deep gorge near a waterfall.
Sonam resurfaced in Ghazipur on June 8, where she surrendered to local officers. Investigators say she conspired with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, and hired three men—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—to carry out the killing. Police allege Sonam even threatened to push Raja off a cliff herself if the plotters failed.

The autopsy confirmed Raja died from two sharp blows to the head. Now the SIT has all accused in custody, piecing together who did what, when, and where.
Sonam’s brother has publicly backed Raja’s family, vowing to fight for justice. Meanwhile, Sonam and Raj Kushwaha have traded blame during questioning, adding new twists to community stories that have gripped the region.
Authorities continue to gather CCTV footage and witness accounts as this investigation intensifies. We’ll keep you posted with every update.
